Man, 38, killed as car hits tree

A 38-year-old man has died following a car crash in Renfrewshire, police said.

William Mitchell was driving his Volvo car on the A737 road near Howwood at about 0030 GMT when the vehicle went out of control and struck a tree.

Mr Mitchell, from Kilwinning, Ayrshire, died at the scene. A full report will be sent to the procurator fiscal.

Meanwhile, a nine-year-old boy suffered serious injuries in a road crash on the A866 road at Point on Lewis at about 1620 GMT on Friday.

He was taken to Western Isles Hospital but later transferred to Yorkhill Hospital in Glasgow where his condition is described as serious but stable.
