WWII mine to be made safe

An unexploded World War II mine dredged up off the Kent coast at Margate by a fishing trawler is due to be detonated in a controlled explosion on Friday.

The parachute mine was dragged up by the Millenia on Wednesday, almost three weeks after it caught a similar device.

Experts from the Royal Navy failed in an attempt to detonate it on Thursday.

"This is the third bomb of this type in my fishing career - and two of them have been in the last three weeks," said skipper Phil Edwards.

Visible explosion

He added: "We were just fishing as normal and had something rather heavy in the gear - we managed to recover it after much struggling."

Dover Coastguard said the mine had been towed to about one mile offshore and would be detonated in an explosion which could be seen from the shore.

Last month's explosion was felt ashore and registered with the British Geological Survey (BGS) in Edinburgh.

Numerous calls were received by Thanet Council and BBC Radio Kent from people fearing a repeat of April's earthquake around the coast in Folkestone
