Police are treating as suspicious the death of a man whose body was found at the bottom of a 60ft castle well. A post mortem examination revealed father of four Ian Clark, 42, from Pontefract, died of multiple injuries.
Firefighters and a major rescue unit went to Pontefract Castle at North Baileygate on Tuesday night after reports a man was in the well.
Police said Mr Clark left Big Fellas nightclub in the town with two men at 0330 GMT and walked towards the castle.
Det Supt Steve Payne said: "That was the last time he was seen and he was reported missing by one of his children on Sunday morning."
'Family distraught' He added: "We need to know who Ian left the club with.
"They may have been the last people to see Ian alive and we need to speak to them.
"Ian leaves a 21-year-old son and three daughters aged 18, 21 and 10.
"Clearly his family are distraught and we are determined to establish for them exactly how their dad died."
Mr Clark's body was found by a security guard who was carrying out checks at the castle.
The castle's remains and underground magazine chamber are open to visitors during the daytime.
